2v2 Challenge
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The 2v2 Challenge is an attacking soccer drill that punishes wasted shots and rewards ruthless transition. Every miss sends the shooter on a recovery run, leaving their partner temporarily outnumbered - so decisions in front of goal suddenly matter. It is intense, competitive, and superb for U10-U16 fitness without a single lap being run.

Setup
- Split the group into two teams, with a goalkeeper in a full-size goal.
- Place two cones 20-25 yards from goal, about 30 yards apart; each team lines up behind one cone.
- Build a 5×5 yard box 10-15 yards beyond the cones (away from goal) and put every ball inside it.
- Don't worry about tidy lines - players re-enter constantly.
How It Works
- Two players from each team step in and play 2v2 toward the goal.
- Rule 1 - the miss: if a shot is saved or off target, the shooter must chase down their ball and dribble it back into the 5×5 box, then rejoin their team's line. Once the ball is back in the box, their team sends in a fresh player to make it 2v2 again. Meanwhile the other team sprints for the box to attack while they are a player up.
- Rule 2 - the goal: a goal earns a point, and the defender closest to the ball is out - they dig the ball from the net and return it to the box before rejoining their line. The scoring team sprints to the box to attack the temporary man-down situation.
- First team to 10 points wins.
Coaching Points
- Rebuild the 2v2 instantly - the man-down window is where games are won and lost.
- Transition between attacking and defending must be immediate, both directions.
- Shoot with purpose: a careless shot costs your team a player for several seconds.
- Talk constantly so partners know when they are outnumbered.
Variations
- Limit touches to speed up combination play.
- Enforce offside to keep attacking runs honest.
- Scale up to 3v3 or 4v4 with the same rules.
