1v1 Competition
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
1v1 Competition is a soccer drill for U10–U16 that trains both sides of the duel at once. Attackers work on running at defenders with speed, exploding past them, and shooting at half-chances; defenders learn to close down fast, steer the attacker wide, and win the ball. The team-scoring format makes every rep feel like a match moment.
This drill pairs well with others in the attacking category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Place a goalkeeper in a full goal and a cone about 25 yards out.
- Split the squad into two teams in different jerseys.
- One team defends, starting in a line beside the goal with the balls; the other team attacks, lining up at the cone.
- Each team attacks for five minutes, then the roles switch.
How It Works
- The first defender passes a ball out to the first attacker, then steps out to defend the 1v1.
- The attacker tries to beat the defender and score; each goal is a point for the attacking team.
- After a goal, a save, or a ball won by the defender, the next pair starts immediately.
- After both five-minute halves, the team with more goals wins the match. Play two matches, and a decider if it's 1–1.
Coaching Points
- Attackers: run at the defender with speed, use a sharp change of pace to get away, and get in behind.
- Shoot at any half-chance - waiting for perfect is how chances die.
- Defenders: remember fast, slow, outside, low - sprint to close down, slow up as you arrive, show the attacker outside, and stay low and balanced.
- Defenders must not dive in; delay until the attacker's touch gets loose.
Variations
- Play 2v2 to add combination play and cover defending.
- Require attackers to beat the defender before shooting - no 25-yard bombs.
- Serve the opening pass in the air to work first-touch control.
